My search
I had heard it before: finding a midwife in Germany can be really tough.
But honestly, I thought – hey, I live in a big city like Munich, this should work out just fine. Still, the day after my positive pregnancy test, I started searching.
It was July 2022 – I was looking for a midwife for March 2023.
The first Google results led me to beautiful and professional-looking websites.
But as soon as I tried to register or book a consultation, I saw the same message everywhere:
“Available appointments starting from April 2023.”
Excuse me?! I’ve known I’m pregnant for one day and I’m already too late?
Am I supposed to find a midwife before getting pregnant?!
After the initial shock, I clicked through various websites and platforms that help you find midwives in Munich or Bavaria.
I contacted everyone who was responsible for my district.
I think I reached out to about twelve midwives – mostly in writing, some by phone. At first, I kept a neat list: name, specialization, services…
Later, I just sent the same message over and over, barely checking what they offered. I was simply exhausted from the search. That phase really made me feel hopeless. All I wanted was someone who could support me, explain things, calm my fears – or just sit next to me and say:
“You’ve got this.”
My parents and in-laws live far away, and I don’t have any close friends with children in Munich. So it was clear to me: I need a midwife. Absolutely.
After a few weeks, I had mentally accepted that I wouldn’t find one.
I started preparing myself to handle everything on my own – with books, online guides, Google, and long phone calls with my mom.
The phonecall
A kind, compassionate man called and told me there was a spot for me at a midwifery practice.
I was completely overwhelmed – with joy!
I immediately started crying and didn’t know what to do with all my emotions.
Wait a minute… a midwifery practice? And how did he even get my number?
Had I applied there somehow?
Apparently, yes – but whatever.
They had a place for me! I had five days to decide – but of course, I said yes right away. There was no way I would let that opportunity go.
What exactly a midwifery practice is – and what happened next – I’ll tell you in another post.
Looking Back
When I look back now, I realize:
Searching for a midwife was my first big “bureaucracy shock” as a mom-to-be in Germany. I learned a lot – especially how early you have to start and how few spots are available, whether you’re in a big city or a small town.
And: how important it is not to give up.
For You
If you’re currently searching – take a deep breath.
It’s okay to feel overwhelmed.
Write a nice honest short text about yourself and why your really wish to have a midwife. Reach out to many midwives, ask friends, if they know any midwife or if they can refer you. you can post as well your text on local plattforms such as nebenan.de or kleinanzeigen.de. Start early, and don’t be afraid to follow up.
Sometimes, the right opportunity comes from a totally unexpected direction.
And always remember:
You’re doing a really great job.
