Finding Peace: Small Rituals in the Postpartum Chaos

When I think back to my postpartum weeks, what I remember most is the chaos. The days often felt the same—nursing, changing diapers, tears, exhaustion, and bursts of joy all mixed together. It was a time when I sometimes wondered if I still existed, alongside everything my baby needed from me.

And yet, there were these small rituals. Tiny moments of self-care that carried me through and gave me a sense of stability. They weren’t big or glamorous, but they meant the world to me.

Today, I want to share three of those rituals with you. Maybe you’ll recognize yourself in them, or maybe they’ll inspire your own little moments of self-care in the newborn phase.

Morning Coffee – More Than Just a Drink

My favorite ritual was my morning coffee. Not because I was obsessed with the taste, but because it symbolized so much more. Every day, my husband made it fresh for me with our coffee machine, often bringing it to me while I was still in bed.

It wasn’t really about the caffeine boost (though let’s be honest—that helped with the sleepless nights). It was about the gesture. The feeling of being cared for while I was giving all of myself to our baby.

I would sit with my warm cup, sometimes still under the covers, with my baby sleeping next to me or snuggled in my arms. That coffee became a small, steady snack for my soul—a daily anchor that brought a sense of normalcy into a world that felt upside down.

Staying Connected – Calls and Messages

Another ritual was my daily call with my mom. I didn’t feel like I had to share everything about how I was doing. In fact, I often didn’t want to. It was enough for her to see the baby and tell me about her own day.

These calls gave me a sense of grounding. They reminded me that life was still moving on outside my four walls, even when my days felt like they were standing still.

The same was true for the short exchanges with my best friend or other mom friends in our WhatsApp group. A quick message, a voice note, sometimes just an emoji or a “How are you?”—it all made me feel connected. And sending out a little positivity myself felt surprisingly good, too. Supporting others gave me energy.

These connections became a net that held me, showing me that I wasn’t alone.

Walking With the Stroller – Fresh Air for Body and Soul

My third ritual was simply going for a walk. It sounds so basic, but it was powerful. Just leaving the house, breathing fresh air, moving my body, and seeing other people reminded me of the world beyond my living room.

My postpartum period happened to be in spring. And there was something so symbolic about that. Seeing flowers bloom, hearing birds sing, watching nature wake up again—it all mirrored my own sense of new beginnings.

Even though I lived in a big city, I found green spots where I could slow down and feel at peace. Pushing the stroller became a kind of meditation for me. Step by step, I remembered: life goes on. For me, for my baby, for all of us.

Small Rituals, Big Impact

Looking back, it wasn’t the big, carefully planned acts of self-care that made a difference. It was these three small rituals: my morning coffee, the daily connection with my mom and friends, and those precious walks outside.

They reminded me that self-care doesn’t have to be complicated. It doesn’t need to be perfect. Sometimes it’s just about little anchors in the day—tiny moments that remind you that you matter too, even in the middle of the chaos.

A Gentle Reminder for You

…f you’re in your postpartum weeks right now, or thinking back to them: never underestimate the power of small rituals. Stay connected with others—especially other moms who understand what you’re going through.

And step outside whenever you can. Fresh air can do wonders for both your body and your mind.

Most of all, be gentle with yourself. You don’t have to have it all under control. It’s enough to find those small islands of self-care that help you breathe again….
